Yes, the key to success in coating interior concrete floors is the preparation. Unfortunately, some old floors that are heavily contaminated with oily substances are probably not worth the trouble of coating with any coating because it is virtually impossible to completely remove some contaminants.
New Concrete Ideally, a curing period of one month per inch of concrete should be allowed before attempting to coat a new concrete floor. However, this is often impractical, and in the majority of cases floors are successfully coated before the moisture content of the concrete has fully normalised. When coating steel trowelled concrete floors that are highly finished and appear to have low porosity it is often worthwhile to acid etch the floor with a dilute solution of #Hydrochloric Acid. Allow 1-2 days for the floor to dry.
APPLICATION Old Floors Thoroughly #degrease and clean the floor. It may be necessary to apply degreaser more than once to remove stubborn oily substances. Acid etch the floor with dilute Hydrochloric Acid. Allow 2-3 days for the floor to dry. It may be necessary to ‘grind’ the floor to remove any previous coatings and/or any significant surface imperfections.
New Floors Thoroughly clean the floor. If the floor has been highly finished (trowelled to a very smooth finish), acid etch the floor with dilute Hydrochloric Acid. Allow 2-3 days for the floor to dry. If a pebble texture is required, grind off the top skin of cement.
TWO METHODS OF APPLICATION MAY BE USED:
Method 1 Add Urethane coatings THINNERS in the ratio of up to 1 part Thinners to 4 parts MONOTHANE HS 50 #GLOSS or #MONOTHANE 45 GLOSS. Using a 12-14 inch, long nap roller apply a heavy coat over the floor. Allow the floor to dry to a tack free stage, that is, it may be walked on without sticking to shoes. Apply a second heavy coat of MONOTHANE HS 50 GLOSS or MONOTHANE 45 GLOSS straight from the can (i.e. do not thin the second coat). Do not delay applying the second coat more than 3-4 hours, to ensure best adhesion to the first coat. Two coats will provide a well sealed finish, however if an extremely durable, high gloss finish is required, allow overnight to dry and apply a third coat. In this situation, ‘buff’ off any surface imperfections, vacuum thoroughly and apply the third coat straight from the can. Apply the third coat with a short nap mohair roller or lambswool applicator.
Method 2 Use a pressure pot to spray MONOTHANE 45 GLOSS. MONOTHANE 45 GLOSS should be reduced with #Urethane Coatings THINNERS to spraying consistency, and applied as heavily as possible without forming puddles. Recoat within 3 - 4 hours if necessary.
Clean Up Thoroughly clean all equipment in Urethane# Coatings #CLEANING #SOLVENT. Dry all equipment before reusing.
Coverage * First coat; 5 - 7m2 per litre. * Second and subsequent coats; 8 – 10 m2 per litre.
